When I began this book I wondered if the title was a misnomer because it seemed to be lacking in both joy and spirit. The twelve steps format, although proven to work for many caught in addictive patterns, seemed to me to be too restrictive when relating to spiritual growth. Frank Rose and Robert Maginel, the authors and leaders of the group which is featured in this book, take a very structured approach and give the participants a Task and a Lesson Objective at each meeting. The participants then report back on their experiences and feelings whilst practising the task.
As the chapters unfolded, I began to understand how using the well-known twelve step approach to overcome unconscious behaviours along with Swedenborg's theology could indeed lead to growth and joy. The exercises allowed the space for awareness and spirit to enter and enrich the participants' everyday lives. After a few chapters I decided to join in with some of the tasks and I enjoyed comparing my react- ions with the group - in particular 'being in the moment' and 'dealing with lying'.
It was obvious that the support and sharing of the group was a key factor in helping many of the participants. For some- one reading the book and working with the exercises on your own, you might find, as I did, that my experiences and belief systems often varied widely from the group leaders' and participants'. This book could be very helpful for those who are interested in a practical structured approach to personal growth, although I should imagine that it would be more interesting and inspiring to share the exercises with a friend or a group.
